Felt Train
The last time I was at my parent's house I was looking through my mom's old craft books for some ideas and inspiration. I remember looking through the same books when I was little picking out our next project. It's funny how different things will speak to you depending on your mood or interests at the time. This is a project that I never payed much attention to but it caught my son's interrest.
Time: About one hour
Cost: Under $10.00 (make use of any scrap felt you have around the house)
Material:
- 2 large sheets of felt one or two colours for the train and black or a dark colour for the wheels.
- Stuffing
- Ribbon
- Velcro
- Button (that we got out of Grandma's button box)
- Permanant marker
- Needle and thread
- Scissors
Directions:
- Double layer the felt, draw the outline of an engine, a caboose and two train cars.
- Cut out the train shapes and circles for the wheels.
- Sew three sides of the engine (by hand works or you could use a sewing machine if you have one.) Stuff the engine then sew up the fourth side.Sew on the wheels. Sew and stuff the train cars and caboose.
- Line the train cars up in the order you want them. Sew one section of ribbon (about 3 inches long) onto the back of the engine. Sew the other section of ribbon on the next train car.
- Using the same material as the wheels (black or dark coloured) cut out 4 strips about 1 inch wide and 3 inches long. Sew the strips onto the train cars one on each side and one on the caboose.
- Sew the two peices of the velcrow onto two opposing strips.
- Sew the button onto the last strip and cut a button hole into the opposing strip.
