Super Mario Party

For Little Misses 4th birthday she wanted a Mario themed birthday party, we'll she wanted a Princess Peach birthday party but she was alright with adding Mario and Luigi. I bought some decorations but I made a Super Mario obstacle course, we even played the theme song while we went through the obstacle course. It was like being inside a video game.
I also made Mario themed cupcakes and snacks.
Super Mario themed cupcakes
These were fun to make and with some fondant it is easy to make them look like recognizable Super Mario characters.
What you need:

Cupcakes (the birthday person's favorite kind)
  • Icing
  • White Fondant (I use white fondant and add food colouring to make the coulours I need but you can also buy already coloured fondant, it's not as messy)
  • Food Colouring
What to do:
  1. Frost the cupcakes with the regular icing.
  2. Kneed your fondant so it is easier to work with (like playdough.)
  3. Separate the fondant into sections for however many colours you need. I did white, green, red and a smaller piece of pink. Set aside one ball of white fondant. Working with one ball of fondant at a time, add 2 drops of food colouring and kneed it into the fondant. This is where it gets messy. Add more drops as you go until you get the colour you want. Continue until you have all the colours you want, be sure to thoroughly wash your hands between each one to avoid mixing colours.
  4. Roll out each ball of fondant
  5. Time to decorate: Cover cupcakes in white red or green fondant. Use the rest of the fondant to make the identifying accessories, a red circle with a white M, a green circle with a white L, little white fondant circles on red or green cupcakes. There are so many possibilities, have fun with it!
Super Mario Themed Snacks
Ingredients:
  • Strawberries
  • Green grapes
  • Marshmallows
  • Cheddar cheese
  • Ranch or Caesar salad dressing.
  • Crackers
  • Bamboo skewers
What to do:
  1. Piranha Plant Skewers (4): Wash 4 strawberries and the grapes. Lay the strawberries on a cutting board. Cut a small triangle out of the end of each strawberry to make a mouth. Assemble one skewer at a time starting with one strawberry and filling the skewer up with grapes. Display the skewers in a green cup.
  2. Toad stool strawberries: wash 4 strawberries, cut off the tops. Place 4 marshmallows on a plate and top with the strawberries.
  3. Lucky brick cheese squares: Cut 1" cubes of cheese, place on a plate. Pour 2tbs of salad dressing into an icing bag (if you don't have an icing bag use a sandwich bag, cutting a small hole in one corner.) Draw a question mark on the top side of each cheese block. Serve with crackers.
For the obstacle course I made gold coins, bricks, boo ghosts, a piranha plant and a mystery brick piñata.
Gold coins: Yellow paper plates.
Boo ghosts: Paper plates
Bricks: Cardboard boxes
Piranha plant: Wardrobe size cardboard box, green, red and white cardboard for the decorations.
Mystery Brick piñata: Thin cardboard box covered with yellow construction paper, filled with candy.

My obstacle course:
I made my obstacle course outside, I used the clothes line to hang my coins and ghosts. I lined up the bricks under the clothes line with the piranha plant in the middle and the lucky brick piñata at the end. One at a time players run through the obstacle course, jumping over the bricks, touching the coins, avoiding the ghosts and the plant. At the end they get two swings at the piñata, continue taking turns until the piñata is broken. We found an hour long loop of the Super Mario theme music which made a good background to the game.
