DIY mini reading nook

I recently bought a new bookcase, it is beautiful and wider than my last one, which gives me more room for books... and decorations! I now have enough room to add a miniature library in a book. As I was looking up ideas for my mini library I came across the idea for a miniature reading nook in a jar. Since I wasn't sure that I wanted to tackle a full library for my first miniature project I tried this and it turned out so cute and cozy and it was fun to make.
What you need:
  • A mason jar, it can be big or small depending on what you have.
  • Mini furniture and accessories: chair, table, books, mini coffee cup etc.
  • Battery powered tea light
  • Tacky glue and glue gun
  • Paper, stickers etc. For the "floor" and background. I used a white wood sticker sheet for the floor and a book page for the background.
What to do:
Attaching the light to the lid:
1. Decide the placement of the light on the inside of the lid. Keep in mind that if you are using a smaller jar like I did you want to make sure that the fake flame hanging down won't touch the furniture. You also don't want the tea light to be too close to the rim of the jar, or else it won't close. Trace a circle around the tealight. Mark the placement of the on/off switch.

2. Using a nail and hammer, CAREFULLY make 2-3 holes in the lid where the on/off switch will be. Make sure to hammer the nail from the outside in, to ensure that the sharp end is towards the inside.

3. Line up the tea light to ensure that the on/off switch is accessible from the outside. Once the tea light is lined up use hot glue to attach it to the lid.

Make a cozy scene:
1. Cut the material you want to use for the flooring in a circle to fit the bottom of the jar. I used a sticker sheet that looks.like wood but anything will work.  Attach.the flooring with Tacky glue or glue gun, depending on which material you use.
2. Add the background, I used a book page but a scrap peice of wallpaper or cards stock will work. Use a peice of scrap paper to measure out the inside of the jar, once it is cut to the right measurement use it as a pattern to cut the same shape out of your background material. Glue it inside the jar.
3. Make a cute little reading nook scene. Glue in your chair, books and accessories.
That's it, attach the lid and turn on the light in the evening for a touch of cozy on your bookshelf. I have a few other book shelf crafts to share soon along with an unveiling of my beautiful new bookcase, stay tuned!
Happy cozy crafting!
